Our History

At around 2000 feet the town of Mt. Airy boasts being the highest point on the railroad between Washington D.C. and New Orleans. In 1874 Mt. Airy was a resort town. Mt. Airy Baptist Church began as a Sunday service out of the Mt. Airy Hotel. The resorts and tourism would eventually come to an end, but the church would continue. In the mid 1870's the church built a one-room building on 4th Street. Eventually Mt. Airy Baptist church would move into a former Episcopal church located in its present location. On Nov. 16, 1956 Mt. Airy Baptist Church burned down. Out of the ashes, much of the current building was erected. A major addition and remodel was completed in 1984. A gazebo was erected on the church grounds to memorialize those killed in a tragic airplane crash in 1984. Today the church continues meeting weekly and reaching out to the community around it in many ways.

Our Pastor

Rev. Jon Huebner began serving as Pastor of Mt. Airy Baptist Church in August of 2019.  When Jon was still in high school in Kansas City, MO, he felt the Lord calling him into ministry. After marrying Beth and working positions in the computer industry, he and Beth moved to Texas to attend seminary. From 1996 to 2012 they worked as volunteers and full-time staff at Mission Arlington in Arlington, TX where they developed churches in multi-housing communities. Their primary church, Heritage, is a bilingual mission of Spanish and English believers that averages over 120 worshipers on a Sunday. After moving back to Northeast Georgia in 2012, Jon began working as a North American Mission Board church planter in Gainesville, GA through a ministry called In His Name. In Gainesville he continued to develop churches in multi-housing communities. Pastoring Mt. Airy Baptist church has been a wonderful experience for Jon and Beth and they look forward to many years of service in this community.

Jon and Beth have a heart for ministry and a desire to serve the Lord. Jon is a 1988 graduate of Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, MO where he majored in Mathematics and Computer Science. Jon completed his Master of Divinity degree at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 2003. He is currently working on his Doctor of Ministry degree from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary where he looks to graduate in May of 2021. Beth is a 1989 graduate of Southwest Baptist University, and a 1991 graduate of the University of Georgia with a Master’s degree in Science Education. She has over 20 years of teaching experience in high schools in Georgia and Texas. Currently she teaches science at the upper school of Tallulah Falls School. Jon and Beth have been married for 32 years and have three children: Jon – 23, Shawn – 17, and Elizabeth– 13.
